What Do You Love About Being a School Counselor?

When we have a minute to step back, our role as a school counselors is pretty amazing. In our buildings we serve a unique role, make a positive impact, and provide a safe space for students and staff. Chelsey, Ashely, and Brandy remind me why we love being school counselors.

We have a unique role

My favorite thing about being a school based counselor is getting to build relationships with the students and staff. Our position is unique in that we truly have the potential to impact every person in our school. I love getting to know my students and having the opportunity to support them by helping them learn the social emotional skills they need to be successful. I also love being a part of helping other educators meet the needs of their students. It is so fun to have such a special and unique role within the school!

We make a positive impact

My favorite thing about being a school counselor is that I can be there for students in their moment of need. I love being able to be the one that helps empower students to face their problems and grow as individuals. As counselors, we get to be there for students in crisis – and connect families with resources when they are in need. There is no greater feeling in the world than having a career that allows you to leave such a positive impact on so many people.

We are a safe space

I consider it a privilege to serve the community as a school counselor. My favorite aspect of the job is creating a warm, safe space for students to use as a refuge from the hustle and bustle of the hallways and classrooms.

I use lamps instead of the harsh overhead lighting to give my office the calming, mindful feeling that is so important for everyone. I keep mindful coloring activities with markers and colored pencils available for that student or teacher who just needs a quiet minute. Spa music, comfortable furniture, and fidget toys finish off the ambience that every student deserves when they need a break. The best perk is being able to do all of my work in that cozy space!
